Resume Styles

When writing your resume, you will want to organize it so that it emphasizes your unique skills and strengths. You can use any combination of organizational styles you feel highlights your individual qualifications. The two most common resume styles are:

• Chronological
• Functional

Chronological Style – In this style, you present your education and work experience in chronological order, beginning with your most recent experiences. For each job, list your job title, employer and dates of employment and describe your duties and accomplishments. This style is best for people whose job experiences closely parallel the positions for which they are applying or for those who have not had large periods of unemployment between jobs.

Functional Style – In this style, work experience is organized by the type of function performed, rather than by date.  For example, work experience is broken down in categories such as Sales Experience, Customer Service Experience and Administrative Experience and specific examples are provided under each heading. You want to demonstrate experiences that directly relate to the job you are seeking. Items are placed in order of importance rather than chronological order. This style is best for those who have gained valuable skills from a wide variety of unrelated experiences or for those who may have had periods of unemployment that are very obvious when presented chronologically.
