Resume Basics

What is the purpose of a resume?

A resume is a personal summary of your professional work history and qualifications. It includes information about your career goals, skills, abilities, education and work experience and is designed to arouse the interest of employers enough that they will seek more information from you through a personal interview.

General guidelines for resumes:

  • Keep your resume brief and concise. 1-2 pages is best. 
  • Print your resume on 8-1/2 x 11 white or neutral coloured paper using a high quality ink-jet or laser printer.
  • Do not use any unusual fonts that may be difficult to read or appear unprofessional. Use a font size between 10 and 12 point.
  • Avoid using graphics on your resume. Do not include a photo of yourself on your resume.

  • Objective
  • Summary of Qualifications
  • Education
  • Employment Experience
  • References

Contact Information - Include your full name, permanent address, phone numbers and email address prominently at the top of your resume. Avoid using nicknames on your resume and ensure you provide a professional e-mail address (ie.

Objective Statement – Identify the type of work you are looking for, including whether you are looking for part-time or full-time as well as the field in which you are interested in working.

Summary of Qualifications – This is a short list of qualifications, personal characteristics and skills that are relevant to the job you are applying for. These are the points that you feel are your strongest “selling” features.

Education - Beginning with your highest level of educational achievement, include information such as university/college attended, degrees/diplomas earned, major, minors, grade point average, date of program completion, and so forth. You can also include any relevant courses you may have taken that are related to the job you are applying for.

Employment Experience - Include information such as company name and location, job title, dates, and duties performed. Include positions which are related, in some way, to the job you are seeking (these might be both paid and volunteer positions).

References – If references are requested, they should be provided on a separate page. On your resume, it is enough to state that references are available upon request. Choose professional references rather than character references.  Direct supervisors or university/college professors who know you and your work make the best references.
